Shuffling Sound
29 Mar 2009 13:55
Hello all. Noticed a shuffling/hissing sound when I am at 1800-2000 RMP (up or down). Above or below that range, no noise. Sounds like an exhaust leak, but it only occurs when I am rolling. Replaced the tires not long ago, but can't seem to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you.

The noise is reminiscent of an exhaust leak at the head...check there first. Sweet bike!

It's the bike whispering "I want to be in Loco's garage!" vawe vawe softwe! Then again I'm not sure I should be teasing someone called Grumpy!
Sounds like an exhaust leak to me too.

Grumpy, sound only in rpm range & rolling? all gears? sorry, trying to mentaly "type". quick things to dismiss, chain noise, rattling brake pads, body bits vibrating at resonating frequencies. Pretty Bike, I can understand your' Quest. G

When the bike is not under load, the power, and pressure, developed in the cylinder is only enough to turn the crank (which is why you don't have to open the throttle much to get it to rev.). Under load, the conditions in the cylinder are MUCH more intense - so a gasket may not leak under no load, but leak like a sieve under load!

Also wondering if it could be a failing speedometer/speedometer cable? Wind pushing something in front against bike and resonating? I once got a bike that had a very lose/sloppy brake lever that would boogie at a certain RPM. Sounded horrible!

Thanks for the comments. Any suggestions for how to determine if I do have an exhaust leak or how to pinpoint it? The sound appears to disappear at anything under 1800 or over 2000. I only hear it in that range whether accelerating, holding the throttle steady, or decelerating.
