Almost Banned

11 Nov 2008 14:50
#246858
Was surprised to see the following statement in
Wikipedia

Almost Banned in the U.S.
The KZ1000 had a higher-than-average accident rate, and because it was selling in such large numbers the US government briefly considered banning it. Much of the concern derived from extremely high accident rates on Kawasaki's earlier bikes, the H1 and H2.

Was active in the motorcycle community at the time, and don't recall anything in the news, rumors, or anything else about this.

Thankfully in 1980 with the advent of the 85mph speedometer all this danger was under control. Thank goodness for government intervention in these things :P
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

It was during Jimmy Carter's ever well meaning Presidency that Joan Claybrook, Secretary of Transportation, proposed that every vehicle be equipped with speedometers that reflected no more than 85MPH. That's common Knowledge! The rest of the story is that she also wanted the lights to flash and the horn to blow at any speed over 85 MPH.
