Yep...this sounds like the correct way to do it, but get your bike back!

You better be quick about it before he parts it out. You owe nothing for the help and make him come after you for the storage fee's if he wants to. No one has a right in any state to hold personal property without filing a mechanics lein or some other sort of lein. If he tries to file a mechanics lein, he has to have paperwork with your signature authorizing the work done. If he tries to file a lein for storage fees he also has to have your signature on a fee agreement. Call the cops and take the title with you.

I think Colin has the right approach also, I could understand the storage part of this deal but as far as the "work he did" It sounds to me like he's trying to take advantage of the situation....But in any case try not to loose your cool (as hard as it can be sometimes). Hope it works out for you. Doug

Update!!!!!!!! I finally have the 77 650b back in my hands!! Granted im $500.00 lighter, but hey it was worth it to get the old girl back. Now i can get her all back together and running again. If this all works out like i hope it will be ready for mid ohio. Then i can get started on my 74 z1b re-build. Oh yea, and i have learned a valuable lesson here, dont bring your bike to some one elses garage.

I'm sorry to hear that the experience put that big of a hole in your wallet. OTOH, it's great to hear your bike is back home and you're back on track. :)

we all get screwed sometimes
i had a member here who used to be a friend of mine go to my in-laws and rob all the parts off my 1000.
( he has not logged in in years )
after some detective work i found out for sure it was him and went to his house with a hammer.
i told him if i don't get me stuff back right now i was going to crush his clutch hand so every time he pulled the clutch and his hand hurt, he knew he robbed a friend.
this douchce sat at my kitchen table and ate my food, bounced my newborn daughter on his knee and then robbed me!
his reasoning was i was doing nothing with it.
so what!
i see pleanty of old muscle cars out there that are rotting away but it does not give me the right to steal them!

bottom line is i'm glad you got the bike back.
$500 is a small price to pay for her and to get this ass out of your life forever.

does anyone remember justice's problums with his bike?

sorry for the rant, it just pisses me off when i read about someone getting screwed like you did.

i have been following this saga for awhile to see if you got her back.
be happy, and if you need parts i have, i'll just donate them to you to get her going because this pisses me off to read this thread.

btw, if anyone wants to know who the rochester,ny thief is, just pm me.
someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

Man, I would set down and talk to the guy. If he's not a shop he can't hold your bike like that.

Good luck.

if he is not a shop and you have no contract its his word against yours and you got the pink slip..
I love the idea of reporting it stoled then turning him in..
if he is a shop he could start a vehicle lien on it and legally own it in about 31 to 35 days..

personally,, violance is not the answer... but, it has allways worked for me ;)
