The latest issue of Motorcycle Classic features a story on the KZ1300. The example in the pics is beautiful and owned by a guy in British Columbia.

Otakar,

My 81's ready to ride. My 85's just about to get off the stand. I've finished cleaning the injectors. Hopefully they'll hold pressure this time. If they do I just need to swap the clutch to a KZ clutch from a ZN clutch and I should be on the road.

Hi Otakar. I'm still in the dreaming stage on my 1300 basket case, though the Voyager is seeing plenty of use. If you don't mind, are you planning any mods for the cooling system? And where do you stand on the 1500 liners?

The liners cost me $1400 just to have them made. Than the hard part starts. This is machining the cylinder block to take them. There are two distinct diameters and than the "O" ring grooves. I have a bad feeling that it will run hot. This is why I have 6 sets of cylinders. If I don't like one I'll just swap them. I have much more confidence in the 1400 kit. Wiseco made custom pistons for me and it was much cheaper for the entire project. Where the total price for the cylinders on the 1500 kit cost me about $2700 for everything (I did all the machining myself except for making the inserts) the 1400 cost me only $1400 for everything. The head is about $1000 with the new parts and the cams were $700. Needless to say I have a bit of coin in this bike just in the motor alone.

So what about the 650 pistons idea? Will the skirts be too thin after boring? Or did you go with aftermarket pistons for a little more compression. I had thought about trying to cast my own dome head pistons to up the compression without oversizing the bore and going with a weld/regrind cam job and porting maybe oversize the valves for better breathing. Seems like the head work is the safer way to make ponies...?

No, I'm losing my mind. Already has the dome pistons, I was going to try flat pistons to drop the compression for use with a turbo.

The 1400 has custom Wiseco 11:1 pistons which were cut to my specs, and the 1500 has GPz750 pistons. In both cases the lower sleeve is .06" thick.
