I love my 1100. I can ride it at ~80 all day leaned over the tank with my feet resting on the buddy pegs for the passenger. Haven't hit the redline yet for top gear, but at around 4600 on the tack it sure felt like there was alot left. The guy that I bought it from says it will start to plateu around 123 but that it still feels solid at that speed.

I hit 145 the last time I tried it and the speedo cable went zinging off woosh right under the bike. I have no idea, all I know is I can barely hold on at those speeds! That was with my feet on the bag pegs as low as I could get, felt like a leaf in a tornado.

I had my dads kz1100 up to 125 and still had more to go. My GPz 1100 is a bit faster:evil: .

My KZ1000E1 will go 309 mph. Heck, if you are going to bench race, you might as well bench race! I can't verify the speed since the bike has an 85 mph speedo.

You are kidding right George? What kz is that? I came on here only to say my speedometer only goes up to 80 also, but as slick says it will go up to 93 miles an hour only at 7000rpm

When bench racing you can pretty much say whatever you want and you don't have to prove it. It is basically just talk. Theoretically a KZ1100 should be able to go to almost infinite speed. But then you factor in gravity, friction, air drag, atmospheric pressure and so on then you are back down to a 120MPH bike. That is basically what bench racing is. You say what you think your bike can do, not what it will do. "I think my KZ1100 can beat your GSXR600. I have more CCs and bigger carbs". Yeah but that GSXR600 is lighter and has much more HP. I know this is an ancient thread over 8 years old, but what happens to the stock speedometer after you pass the 85mph mark? Does it go back down, does it just get pinned there, does it just keep going up, or does it break? This is a bit worrying to me, as I typically see over 100mph every day in my cage, and I'm sure eventually I'll be doing the same on two wheels. 82' KZ1100 Shaft A2

Those 85mph speedos were the result of bizarre hallucinations on the part of President Carter's administration. They thought they would make vehicles safer - of course they were dead wrong.
In my experience the speedo will just stay pinned at 85mph until you slow down. Here's how I came by that understanding. Years ago, my buddy and I were going to superbike races at the Poconos Raceway. I had my trusty 1977 KZ650-C1 and he had a newer (I believe 1982) KZ750-4. We got onto some open road with zero traffic and opened up both bikes. My was topped out at redline at 120mph. He would pull ahead of me then let up then pull ahead etc. After 10 minutes (and for me that was a very intense 20 miles) we slowed down and stopped to get a burger. That's when he asked me why I wouldn't speed up when he did. I explained I was topped out at redline and was not going to exceed redline since blowing up a motor between my legs at 120 mph didn't seem like a good idea. He almost crapped himself. His bike had one of those 85mph speedometers and he had no idea that we were flying along at 120 mph. He said his speedometer was reading 85 mph the whole time. In fact, he probably was going 125 or a bit more when he would pull ahead of me. Ed

You can get another speedo and modify yours. How fast? How much time and road do you have?
