I don’t know about the earlier motor but on the “J” the cams are interchangeable (electronic tach) that’s why the sprockets have an “in” and “ex” bolt position. Before I found my GPZ cams I had a pair of “J” inlet cams as the lift is slightly higher than the exhaust (I was starting with “K” cams which are the softest of all)

No you were not taken as long as they are stamped the same at Z3.

Custom cam grinders back in the day often used stock cores to spray weld and regrind so this is a common occurrence. WebCam also did this a lot when no billets were available.

I have two custom ground WebCam cams in my 650 drag bike engine both are old stock exhaust cams way bigger than most offered for the 650.
