My first bike, wrenchmonkees hope
12 Apr 2012 22:17 - 09 Dec 2012 00:17
Hello all,
i'm a new bike owner, of a 1979 kz750. I picked it off a guy in Memphis that rebuilds bikes to being cafe's but switched from all styles to only Honda, so i got a steal for $450.
i have to re-attach the hand controls
get the motor running again
finish the seat
install rear sets (from dime city cycles)
i have numerous questions;
1. Can i start the motor without the gauge cluster plugged in? because of the short cafe bar, i can't fit the gauges.
2. do i need to replace the filter before changing oil? it's very involved so i read, i just need to get her to turn over first.
3. anyone install rear sets on their kz?

welcome to the forum.
yes u can run it without gauges.
change the filter at the same time u change the oild. drain oil remove old filter. instal new filter and oil.
lots of guys have rearsets hear. the trick is finding a set that will bolt right on to your bike. most guys make mods to get a set to fit.

Welcome.
Oil filter should not be to difficult.
Get yourself a manual, the Factory Service Manual for your particular model being the best.
Here's the kz650's oil change instructions:

img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/rstnick/...items/oilchange2.jpg
As far as rearsets, search for that in te forums as it's been discussed.
I've used 2004 Suzuki GSXR600 pegs, brackets and levers on my KZ.
This section on the Do The Ton has lots of rearset info:

Well figure i'd give some update pics on the Bike. A ton has happened since posting pics, namely i got married. So that took a couple months off the bike project. I have enlisted the help of my buddy who is a Hot Rod builder to help me get the cafe up to speed and goin before it gets too cold.

Some more pics:
BTW - The rearsets are temporary to verify where i like the foot placement, But we'll mill a cool looking bracket and weld it on later.
If you notice, I used the existing Battery tray to conceal all my junk. The Battery fits in there (On top of the wood block which be fixed after a few test rides) The Regulator is bolted on the front of the tray. The other small pieces are rubber fitted into the "junk tray."
Thats a pic of my new handle bar / control set up. I had to get a new master cylinder so i opted for a "modern" kawasaki master that sits up high.

I think the 750-Twin oil filter is in a different location.... behind a left side engine cover or something.
