A 50 dollar bike...
01 Feb 2012 09:16
Hey guys, i posted an add on Craigslist a few days ago saying me and my dad bought crappy motorcycles and got them running again. I had a few calls but nobody seemed to understand the true "crappyness" I was searching for. Somebody actually called me with a harley sportster and said he wanted like 4 grand for it. Anyways... i got a call from somebody last night saying they were calling about my ad. He said he had a 1977 KZ750 twin. We got to talking about price and i told him my budget. He said "ahhh shit you can just take it for 50 bucks..." uhhh what!? YAAAAAYY. going to go pick it up tomorrow probably. Motor is free and has good compression from what he said. Complete bike only problem is the mufflers were hacked off by a previous owner. Ahh well, loud pipes do save lives dont they?
More to come on this bike tonight!!

My old BSA sounded like a frieght train going up the side of a mountain and I still got creamed by a dump truck.

It was loud enough to earn me a handful of traffic tickets. The loud pipe argument go on forever and will never truly be solved. Many a Harley rider with loud straight pipes has been hit and many a bicycle with no pipes has been hit. I guess it really all depends on the nitwit in the car/truck and how attentive, skilled, and/or lucky the guy on the bike is. Best bet is for the guy on the bike (loud or quiet) to drive defensively, watch for vehicles turning left (the greatest cause of bike accidents), and lay off the booze when riding.

Hells yea. My 1000 does have a baffle but when i ride i almost always touch 8000 before shifting gears so its ROARIN' and i still got dipshits pulling out in front of me. Just before i put my bike away for the winter, i actually had to go up in somebodies yard, onto a sidewalk, and then hop the curb and go back onto the street because some dummy in a truck pulled out and basically blocked off the whole road. The dumbass looked me right in the eye when he did it.. Loud pipes save lives if people behind the wheel of a car are smart and vigilant. I can say that in Sioux City, most of the drivers are definitely not either of those. Oh.. and i love your BSA. I like how it kinda looks like a trail bike

Went and got that nasty 78' KZ750 last night
It was a steal at 50 bucks. Came with a KZ1000P highway bar too. I did find some disturbing things when we were looking at the bike though. First off the spark plug hole threads are all buggered up. I have already chased them with an old plug and the spark plug seems to go in and tighten ok. Also, this bike only pumped about 80 PSI compression on both cylinders. I shined a flashlight down in the spark plug hole and saw a bit of rust on top of both pistons. Another issue is the slide on The carb for cylinder 1 is stuck open. The diaphragms look good, i think its just alot of varnish. There are TONS of good parts on this bike though. The only thing bad is the cylinders in the top end of the motor. Gastank has no dents even but its rusty as hell on the inside. All the bar controls are there, and the chrome spoke wheels are beautiful. Cant say the same about the exhaust since its hacked up at the mufflers. I looked in the seat and found the registration. Last time it was registered was in 1994. I also got the license plate so maybe i can apply for a lost title. So far though, my biggest concern is the motor. Im thinking i may just get over my fear of machine work and hone the cylinders myself. The i can get some new rings and gaskets and throw it all back together. Not sure what we are doing yet.
