Only the back bucket is plastic the lens is glass. I just ground what ever slots I required into the plastic housing. just copy the one you have in there it is very easy. i know that on ours it makes it idiot proof so your light is always vertical. That is why I like the plastic housing, you can do what ever you need with it. The one on my GPz1150 is the exact same series just rectangular and it is the same way plastic back with glass lens. Tap it with a coin and you will see what I mean.

At $490.00 for 1 light bulb they should have a 30 year replacement warranty. Unfortunately, I didn't see any warranty info in the ad. I just imagine the joy I would feel if I bought one and it blew out after a couple months. :woohoo:

The bulb is replaceable (D1S). You are not paying $490 for "1 light bulb"... You are buying a replacement headlamp system.

Try replacing a headlamp assembly (just one side) on any BMW with Xenon headlamps. Some will run you over the $1000 mark easily... Per side!

That is the same problem I ran up against with my Jaguar. They wanted $97 for one bulb. So I replaced it with mine. You are suppose to replace both when one burns out. I did it with two of mine for two thirds the price of just one of theirs. I was also able to get any wave length I wanted not just the one that Jag had.

I see . Your right. It had me fooled.

They are bosses on the plastic , not slots. No worries. I'll make it work. it looks like the wires will be long enough to mount the ballast under the tank. is there any heat issues from the motor,i should address.

I just would not mount it right above the head. You can grind those bosses off they come off very easy.

Hay Mark, if you want to put the ballast under the tank, you can take the plug which normally would plug into your light-bulb, and bring it outside the headlight bucket. You can pull that as far back as you can under the tank. Tht will give you what ever distance you need besides the 16" lead on the bulb harness.

I have two questions.

Can a HID headlight be used with a modulator?

I recently installed some 1157 LEDs in a taillight with a modulator that flashes the two elements when the brakes are applied. When I tested the LED bulb it was dim with brakes on and bright when the brakes were off. I double checked all the wiring and all was in order. When I removed the modulator from the taillight circuit the LED bulb worked correctly. This made me wonder if the HID headlight would behave similarly with a modulator in the circuit.

Second question concerns the reserve lighting device on my GPz.

How will it respond to the HID setup? If necessary how do you bypass the reserve lighting device? I suppose a load resistor simulating more load is a possible solution, but won't that negate one advantage of the HID (lower electrical load).

The HID unit must have a constant voltage of 12-16V. If you are asking if you can flash the HID light the question is ABSOLUTELY NOT. YOU MUST NOT HAVE A MODULATOR IN THE HEADLIGHT CIRCUIT. If the modulator works in the way that it switches between the HI and LO beams the system will not turn on. The reason the tail light did not work is because the two intensities work by supplying a lower voltage to the tail light and the prescribed full voltage to the break light. Not by switching between two different intensity circuits. Theoretically the HID unit should work with the reserve lighting unit. The reserve lighting unit works in the way that it supplies a reduced voltage to your high-beam element when it detects that the low beam is burned out. Since the system runs off of your low beam circuit but just consumes about two thirds the wattage, It should still work in its prescribed way. If fore some way the reserve lighting unit is a problem , it can easily be bypassed.

I thought that I might re-kindle this thread since I have had a large amount of PMs and emails about this subject from about five people here. I think that this subject warrants re-visiting. I have given my phone # to a few of you already. If any of you want to talk to me, send me a PM and I will give you my phone #. I love my setup and have never been asked about it or been stopped for it by the authorities. Wit proper adjustment you should not have any problems.

Hey Otto,

What reflector unit do you use for your HID setup?
2000 ZRX 1100

If it has tits or tires, it'll give you problems!
