Ive never lost a oil fill cap on any of my bikes either. Ive never used a wrench to tighten the cap. It sounds like your getting it way to tight. You will end up breaking or stripping something or you will get somewhere and have to take the cap off and you wont be able to cuz you wont have your wrench.

If it needed a wrench to tighten it, the factory would have made it a hex nut style cap...... God gave you a thumb and forefinger for a reason....

I know someone makes a replacement one that does have a hex nut for a KLR not sure if it fits other bikes. A friend of mine has one on the KLR that he purchased last year. So I guess my point is if you wanted to make one wrench tight you could. I have to add oil to often :(

LOL. I use the window to check oil level, and only remove the cap when I am changing the oil, which is always in my garage. Why else would you remove the cap? If your bike uses more than a quart every 3000 miles then your bike has issues.

All was trying to do was help a fellow KZ rider but apparently I'm the only one that has ever lost a cap so I'm just going to delete the thred.

The whole reason I bought a KZ was because I'm poor and it is the only "Hot Rod" post I will ever own. So yes the bike has issues. It a daily rider and my main transportation. Between that and not having a garage to do work it leaves me limited as to what can be done and when. I'm pretty disappointed in all the negative feedback.

I wasnt trying to be negative. Its a good idea if you are worried about losing it. I wouldnt worry about it to much. These old bikes are a blast to ride either way. Stuff happens and it always seems to me they end up leaking oil somewhere, espically if the rubber parts are old so it couldnt hurt to wire it so your not to lose it. You might also wanna look into getting a extra. I made a box that sits under my seat. I use it for my emergency tools and supplies. So i could just throw one in there.

Please don't take me wrong either. I understand that some bikes do like to mark their territory, ala British bikes of the 60s.
I do snug my cap down with a wrench, and my bike has a toolkit if I did need to add oil on the road. And I carry a quart of oil in my saddlebags just in case.
I admit I find the tether an interesting concept that I have never seen before.

You don't need a tether. Just set it on the flat part of the motor there and when you feel your leg getting soaked in oil you stop and put it on :silly: Yep, been there done that.

I think it's fairly normal that bikes burn oil when they go on long trips if ridden hard. I was doing a buck fifty for a bit going down the road. As far as people getting distracted when doing these kinds of things it happens to everyone unless you are a perfect human being and never ever make mistakes. I am not in the least bit concerned. As for only taking off the cap when you change the oil, well that at some point in time is not going to work for you and when you happen to ride a 1000 miles in one day and don't check your oil and then get up and ride some more then...
