every time you turn left on this bike you will have to fight the urge to stick your left foot out and forward searching for the ground.
because ol' bill is going to live on in this bike with you.

Well I thought it was time to say goodbye to the 80's artwork on the tank. I know a few of you thought I should save it for "Terry Lee's" family, but nobody knows who she is. Bill probably knew but...

Anyways here is what she looks like nekkid...

And I found what the dirty girl was hiding under that paint..

An inch thick of bondo! Gaaaa. I think I can pop that out some more before she gets new clothes. THe inside actually looks pretty good too.

I took some time to clean up the gas cap and petcock this weekend. I remeber that the petcock never seemed to shut off right. When I pulled it apart, the rubber looked brand new. Whoever rebuilt it last time did not replace the spring behind the diaphram. Fortunately I dug around and found one that should work. Cleaned up real nice too. Green pads are amazing on small aluminum parts!

My high dollar HF angle grinder pooped the bed 15 minutes out of the box. Thaey just don't make $15 angle grinders like they used to.

Wow, I think you should try and pull those dents out some before you paint that tank. I don't know about 1" thick filler. I was worried about one that was 3/8" on my tank.

That sucks about your angle grinder. Many people here have had good experiences with the grinders from HF. It seems like it's a crapshoot with their stuff.

Just save that picture of Terry Lee. You won't forget her. Someone once told me that you better like what's painted on your tank. You'll be seeing it a lot.

Tonight I thought I would try to pull out the bad dents. My friend and retired machinist offered the use of his stud gun. I tried to get some better pics of the bad dents.

His stud gun was brand new from HF, or so we thought...

You can see the burnt lead lying on the table. Fortuantely my buddy was able to replce it in a few minutes.

In one of the pics you will notice that one of the studs pulled a hole in the metal. The sides of the tank are remarkably thin compared to the metal on the top. My guess is that during the forming of the tank that the metal stretches quite a bit around the die. Nothing a MIG won't fix however as evidenced by the pictures. We actually tried pressuring the tank with air in the beginning with no results. This dent was pretty bad however, I think it may have worked on a nice shallow knee dent but this was much worse and the metal had stretched.

On to the next issue :)
