Does my kz900 appear to be leaning too much on the side stand? There's a lot of play in the stand and it seems like maybe over time the "U" fitting has gotten a little bent and has widened causing this play. I'm thinking of taking the stand off, heating the upper end of it red hot with a torch and squeezing the fitting in a vice or with large channel locks to make the opening smaller. My question is, should there be play in the stand under normal conditions and has anyone ever done this to repair the stand.?

I apologize for the large pic and multiple posts of it. I tried deleting the photo but the remove file function isnt working. Also tried deleting the entire post and starting over but can't find a way to do this either. I believe we used to have the delete post option but no way to do that now. I've tried both Firefox and Edge but no help. Is it me or is there some kind of a glitch? If a mod sees this would you please remove all 3 photos and i'll post a smaller one.

Leaning to far, bent side stand or frame hole worn, I've seen both.

A closer pic of the stand would be more help, you may have an ltd stand on it which were shorter.

Could also be a 650 stand. 650 stands are slightly curved and consequently they lean about as much as your pic. Couple that with a worn frame hole and your doubling the trouble. Easiest fix for enlarged frame hole is to sleeve the bolt.
If you take a look at the 900 pic below the black bike in the background is a 650, you can see it leans far more than the 900.

The lean looks pretty reasonable to me,though I dont own a Z900. If you put the bike up straight,does the stand wobble about? If so,take it off and have a good look.It should be obvious if the hole in the frame is worn or if the U on the end of the stand is bent.
If the latter,then your idea of heating and bending back into shape should work fine.Ive done the same myself If the former,I dont know what the best solution is. Maybe weld up the hole and re-drill it.

The LTD stand is a different (shorter) length. That could be the issue. Or you might have the wrong bolt in the hole, which allows the space at the bolt end to open up. You can fix it without heat...just use a hammer to bang it back, but be sure to use the correct bolt or it will quickly bend again. Ask me how I know!

Ugh... I have to clean that garage!

Are your tires stock size?
When I got my KZ305, I felt it was leaning too far. I removed the kick stand and inspected bolt and hole. All was well. I too felt there was too much slop in the pivot, but decided it is suppose to be there. The bike did have an over sized rear tire. Since then, I replaced both front and rear tires. Rear went from 130/90-16 to 120/90-16. It leans slightly less now, and engine is running about 200 rpm faster at 60 mph.

I helped clean your garage! Heat the section of stand at the 180° angle point. Towards the bottom. Give it about an 160° Obtuse angle! Might lift it a little.
Sorry, could not resist. 40 years ago when we lowered the KZ's with hog wheels and re- drilled the rear shocks at the bottom of swing arm, cutting off the tab for the 10mm bolt, our bikes stood up to straight. I learned after that, then the tail light wiring rubbed and blew fuses. This is how you learn!
