Numbers on bolt heads?
15 Apr 2013 21:28
Can someone explain the number 7 and number 4 bolts on a Z1? Where they go etc..
Down the road I am thinking about having, or doing it myself, all my original bolts cleaned up and replated but I have no idea where they go.

I believe the numbers would indicate the strength of said bolt.

99% of the bolts are zinc plated with no markings. I know 7's go on the master cylinder and clutch perch. Those are chrome plated.
I sent all the hardware out for replating for my current Z1 project. I'm using the parts diagrams for sizes.

I know it can't be strength as the 550 I have has 7 marked on the bolts that hold the motor mount plates on yet my Z1 had 7 stamped on the bolts for holding the master cylinder on.

It's hard to get a definitive answer on these bolts regarding position and grade. But as above I've always heard that the number had some relevance to strength as well.....nothing to do with modern grading.
As far as position goes, you'll need someone with a dead original bike to help there.
Pretty sure the front fender uses No. 4's though?
Bit more from Z-Power
"For those who dont know the difference, if you look in the parts book, all bolts with the letter `G` in the part number are the ones with the numbers on them, normally the number 4 on 6mm bolts and 7 on the 8mm bolts. If the part number has a `B` in it then the head is just plain. If it has a `N` in it then it is chrome headed."

I know 73 z1's had #4's in the bottom of the tool tray (and a few others), the 75's did not. I don't recall any #4 bolts on either Z1B I have. I can double check my hardware stash though.
