Pics of bar-end mirrors on KZ's
11 Oct 2009 18:35
I've been looking at installing some bar-end mirrors on my LTD after I installed some Daytona touring bars a few weeks ago. The stock mirrors have always vibrated at highway speeds and now I have to tuck in my elbows to see behind me. I think the bar-end mirrors will look a lot better as well. The one thing I'm uncertain of is how I will mount them. I've seen some that mount on the very end of the bar, but my handle grips are not open on the ends. I thought they made some that mount elsewhere on your handlebars and extend over to the end of the bar too, but am not 100% sure.
If I wanted to mount mirrors on the end of my handlebars, would I have to buy some open ended grips and just move the grips towards the center of the bars? It's probably a stupid question, but I would like to see some pics anyone may have of these style mirrors on their KZ. Thanks!

Take a razor blade and cut off the ends of your grips..

The bar end mirrors are fine for passing safeties. But they don't really work all that great for seeing angles behind you.
OEM mirror positions are where they are quite simply because thats the best/safest place for them. Deviating from those positions means an ever decreasing area of rear view coverage. blah...
Just something to think about...
I like the chopper style mirrors that emgo has personally. They retain the origional viewing angles pretty well, but are slimmer and newer, and cooler
Cheers, n' good luck!

That wasn't a stupid question at all, I wondered the same thing about the closed-end grips.
Roy-b, did you make those aluminum (?) header flanges or does somebody sell them?

I always put bar end mirrors on all my bikes. If you do make sure you get the ones with the rubber plug that expands. The metal ones will fall out. As for not being able to see, with the stock ones all you can see is your elbows. The bar ends give you a lot better field of vision IMO.
Only one shows in the pic but you get the idea. I also use Grab On foam grips.

Here's a couple of pics of mine. I really like them. I don't get much vibration. None at all on the clutch side, but get a bit on the throttle side. As far as viewing area, I find them good. Although, with them on clubmans you have to actually tilt your head down to look at them. Wouldn't be a problem though with normal bars.

I had trouble finding good mirrors for my KZ1000 when I broke one of the originals. My criteria for what I wanted was nice looking, no vibration, and cheap. I found them on Ebay for $15.00. They came from a late model Suzuki M50. I've been real pleased. I bought a set of Emgo's that were supposed to be original style but they vibrate so bad as to be unusable.

I have mine UNDER the bars. It may sound strange, but you look under your arm and have an unobscured view backwards.
