Leon a quick question. After trying to shortcut and go the ALL BAlLs route I realized the stem ( GSXR 1100 ) is not quite long enough in my opinion. I have the old stem removed from my KZ tree and sleeve turned for the bottom triple..........my question is how do you weld the two together?? On the outside and then turn it down to size??
Your last post said weld on the inside!!?? My stem only has roughly 1/2 I.D and I'm unable to get my tig torch anywhere close........even with the smallest cup. Suggestions??

no problem.

i usually try to weld the end .

when i machine the stem and machine the sleeve i try to leave a bevel on each so when pressed together they leave a groove i can make sure i get adequate penetration so i can machine the weld down smooth with no worry of the weld failing.

you can use the stem out of your old kz lower triple.
we machined out some aluminum bungs that had the right hourglass shape inside and then was able to mount the stock gauges.

so the answer to your question is yes you can reuse your original gauges.
but there is going to be some manner of machining/fabrication and that is going to have to happen to facilitate them.

To hijack an already hijacked thread

Leon, Clausing 5900 series lathe? I have one also, along with a few spare parts if you need anything. I converted mine to metric thread cutting.

So cool to see skilled craftsmen on a lathe and TIG doing quality work. There's nothing better than making something new fit something old using skills.

I just picked up a 1985 GPZ750 that I'd like to slot a newer USD front end onto and might need some help. Subscribed and would love to see or hear any updates on this project.
