No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI just recently purchased a new igniter (21119-1040) for my 81 650 CSR, but is showing signs of a possible short in one of the wires, which is causing the entire engine to cutout when moving the igniter around by hand. I'm hoping to just go ahead and buy another igniter rather than go through the entire trip and cost of moving to Dyna S, since everything works as stock perfectly (and bike is very low mileage).

I've seen several new manufactured IC igniters such as from caltric, as well as some "similar looking" IC igniters with different model numbers (such as 21119-1020). I'm wondering if I can use one of these other igniters besides the 1040 item such as the one on the kz1100? I've got the mechanical advancer underneath by the engine.

Example:

Also, does anyone still have a copy of the GM DIY igniter? All of the old links are dead. Thanks!

As long as it looks like the one in your photo, it should be swappable. Different part numbers may just be for different length wires. As long as you can splice wires, it should work.

I have a link to the GM version in my signature links. But be aware, the GM ignition modules are being designed differently now. You have to use the older type that was very common about 10 years ago. Details on how to tell the difference is also linked to from the GM project page.

EDIT: It looks like amazon web service is down, or being uncooperative. I had to reconfigure the links for some reason.

Is there a way to make this diy igniter for a single coil single cylinder?

For single coil and cylinder igniter use the diagram for a KZ 750 twin Version.

It will not work on a 1981 Kz250D2 CSR. That bike uses electronic-advance, and may actually be a CDI..

I tried using a cdi not sure if it supposed to be dc or ac considering it’s full electric start with no kicker. But the stator and trigger aren’t wired together like a normal modern electronic system. And it’s throwing me off. I posted a topic about it and needing help. Lol and how the stator only has 2 yellow wires and a neutral switch wire, and the trigger has a green and red wire.

There are scads of different bikes that use the same ignitor (see below.) I'd be leary of purchasing an aftermarket ignitor unless someone else has gineypiged it first.

BTW, your bike uses the same ignitor as mine. I'll be glad to test yours on my bike if you want to perform a sanity check.

As mentioned, his bike does not use the same system found on most larger Kz's. It's incompatible with those igniters.

But according to Texas's link, his bike uses one that is used on other 200's and 250's. So maybe he can score a used one from another model.

My bad. Didn't recognize that we had a request inside someone else's thread. I saw the OP's signature mentioning '81 650 CSR and I thought that's what we were discussing. Never mind...
