Need new ignition coil for 1984 KZ440 D6
13 Apr 2016 14:29
It looks like its time to replace the coil on my KZ440 (I'm pretty sure that the one on it is the original).
The bike is showing all the signs of weak spark: the spark looks red instead of light blue, the plugs run a bit on the sooty side, the engine has a slight miss especially at higher rpms or under load, plus power and fuel mileage are sub-par.
So, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good replacement coil for my ride?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationIf it has points, you can use any four Ohm coil. If it's electronic ignition, they usually use a lower Ohm coil but a four Ohm can be used with no problems.

Are the points clean or new? Is there sparking at the points?

It's electronic ignition. The wires, spark plugs and plug caps are new. Also the timing advance unit has been cleaned and lubed.

I see that there is a coil on ebay made by Caltric that fits my bike, but any reviews that I could find of their products were negative. Has anyone here had any experience with Caltric parts?

Perhaps the weak plug spark is resulting from loss of voltage between the battery and the coil.
Question -- With the ignition switched ON and the engine NOT running, what is the measured voltage being received at the coil primary terminal as compared with the measured voltage between the battery posts?
The following illustration is an example of the several connections where voltage might be lost. (Just ignore the second coil in a dual coil system).
Good Fortune!

Could he use a Dyna ignition coil? either 2.2 ohm or 3.0 ohm? or are they not available individually?

On ebay there are cheap replicas of the factory coils, sold individually. They are usually listed under Kz550 or other inline-four Kz's. My buddy bought two and they've worked great so far (about 10 months). You have to put new wires on them. They were like $40 each. Make sure to ask for bolt spacing and ohms if it's not listed. You want 2.2 to 2.6 ohms.

Thanks for the great info Patton--I really appreciate it--what is acceptable voltage loss in the ignition system?

I bought a Caltric R/R. It failed in a week and almost ruined my alternator. Cheap CHINESE JUNK. That's a boat.

Would aim for no voltage loss or at least a very minimal voltage loss, because any loss is likely due to corrosion in the connections and/or switches between the battery and coil.
Could be helpful to verify the quality of spark produced when the existing coil is known to be receiving full voltage from a good fully charged battery.
Perhaps the existing coil is capable of producing fat blue plug sparks while the engine is being spun over via the electric starter (or kick starter if so equipped).
Good Fortune!
