Trying to identify this speedo
03 Jul 2013 17:30 - 03 Jul 2013 17:31
Hello all.. this is my first post here, but some of you may know me as Mr.E over on dotheton.com or the sohc4 forums. I am tryibg to identify this speedometer. I bought this 81 kz550A a while back and it is missing a tach. Then I noticed this speedometer doesn't really match the others from that year. I'm guessing its on here because this bike will easily bury the stock 80mph speedo? If I can find out what this is, and the associated tach will also work, I'd like to go that route if possible.

Standard KZ speedo as far as I can tell. It looks exactly like the speedo on my 750 twin, except I have chrome covers on mine (sold by Z1 Enterprises).

It's a dead ringer for the 1977 KZ650-B1 / 1977 KZ650-C1 speedometer. Here's a pic of my 1977 KZ650-C1 gauges. Be careful if you decide to buy the tach. Beginning in 1978 the gauges had a blue ring around the dials as shown in the second picture. The 1977 has a black ring like yours. Ed

Great! Thanks guys. Wow, looking at those clusters versus mine, I'm missing quite a bit. May be best to go ahead for a complete cluster to make sure everything is uniform. Just curious tho, do you know if the kz750 twin or kz650 clusters are a direct bolt on? My plan wa to do a bit of a restoration on this bike bike but I don't mind a little custom fabrication either.

The KZ650 B&C and the KZ750 twin used the same speedo & bracket, but those on the KZ550 were different. I'm not saying it cannot be made to work, but I don't believe it will be an exact match. Ed

Ok, thanks again. Its not hugely important to me that this be 100% original, but I am wanting to have a speedo setup that actually reads accurately throughout the speed past 80 mph. I suppose I'm going for a "what it could have looked like from the factory" if the factory had done a few things differently. So ill be doing some work then, and trying to figure out what I can do to adapt this old lump. Thanks guys, and here's what the whole bike looks like.

If you want it to be accurate, you need a GPS or convert to electronic speedo.
The mechanical speedos were never known for their accuracy.

Thanks.. Yeah this one had been sitting a few years under someone's porch. clean plugs, fresh battery, fresh gas, and it fired right up. My first bike was a gpz750 years ago. Wish Id never sold it but I was young and stupid. So far Ive replaced the seat and battery tray on this one. Fixed a few hillbilly wiring patches as well. I am tossing about the notion of just buying an acewell gauge for it and making a custom bracket. Superbike bars as well. This one will be my daily ride, and hopefully my son will get years of fun out of it one day too, cause Im not letting go of this unless another gpz falls into my lap.
