1983 GPz750 Junction box questions
20 Oct 2012 12:18
I rode from Indy to Terre Haute a few weeks back, and my bike stopped twice, no power. I have traced it to the junction box under the left side cover. This box has 4 relays in it. I suspect one of the relays, but I don't know how to test it. Oddly enough, once I got it started the last time, I was able to ride it all the way from Terre Haute back to the far northeast side of Indy with no issues.
Last fall I rode from Indy to SW Ohio, all around SW Ohio, and back home with absolutely no issues, so this is a new thing.
Thanks in advance.

Well, prior to the trip I cleaned all the connections on the back troubleshooting another issue, so I do not think it is the connector. The only other thing I can think of is the relays (the silver things). Perhaps one overheated? IDK, just trying to figure it out.

if you pull a relay can you duplicate the problem? NO power? I have no clue what they control
but if we can figure it out I have everything still intact for the electrical system But have the bike nearly tor apart so hard for me to try and duplicate on my end.
I am sure you have wiggled the wires etc...
my tail/brake light connector the pin pushed back when i plugged it in took me a minute to figure that out
my tail light would work then go out i open the seat to mess with it it would be back on

Re: 1983 GPz750 Junction box questions
20 Oct 2012 17:28Yes, I have traced it through the various wiring diagrams. It goes through the MAIN relay, which is the one on the right as you look at the junction box mounted on the bike. Pulling the MAIN relay shuts everything down, which is what was happening, so that makes sense.ramtough_63 wrote: if you pull a relay can you duplicate the problem? NO power? The center relay is the starter relay and the far left one is the headlight relay.
I pulled each relay this morning and the connections are clean as a whistle, so it is not the connection itself.
I tried pulling the starter relay to see if I could swap the two, but then the bike would not start (DUH, not one of my brighter moments).
If you don't need them, the one on the right and the center are parts #056700-5260 and I could use them.

Hi, Your local Auto parts store should stock the relays (aftermarket).
Or, There could be a broken wire in the loom around the stearing head.
Or, corroded pins in the connectors behind the headlight. Look for the one that goes to the ignition switch.
