Using `84 GPz Regulator/Rectifier on `81 KZ750 LTD
20 Aug 2011 12:44
I`m not sure if I wired plug right. The old KZ R/R had a brown sensor wire.`84 doesn`t.I looked at both year wiring diagrams and spliced brown to red/white.Should I disconnect brown totally or am I overthinking? This has turned into a major project as the harness was in terrible shape.Since I haven`t posted much, just want to say if it wasn`t for this website NONE of my bikes would run. Thanks for helping!

The ZX750 A2 reg/rec should have 6 wires. 3 yellow, 1 white, 1 black/yellow, and one brown.
It should match up with the LTD.
If it has 5-wires, it is an aftermarket or from another bike.
The brown wire is how the 6-wire reg/rec senses battery voltage. The 5-wire reg/rec uses the output wire to sense battery voltage.
When using a 5-wire reg/rec on a bike that originally had a 6-wire reg/rec you leave the brown wire from the harness unconnected. Tape it up securely since it will be a live wire when the bike is on.
Never connect the brown wire to the whie wire, that will drain the battery, and will prevent you from turning the bike off completely.
Note: the above is not general information for all bikes, but is specifially for KZ's with 3-phase permanent magnet alternators.

"The old KZ R/R had a brown sensor wire.`84 doesn`t.I looked at both year wiring diagrams and spliced brown to red/white."
With these 6 wire R/R the Brown wire needs to be to a Switched 12v source. If directly Spliced to the Red/ White, it will drain the battery. Just as Loudhvx said.
Do not Splice the Brown to the Red/ White. If using the Brown for voltage sense, it must be a switched source, but also the Voltage MUST be very close to Battery voltage. If it is less do to demand on the circuit/ bad connections, the Brown will see less than the actual Battery voltage, causing the R/R to increase output level. Thereby overcharging the Battery, boiling off the electrolyte, and causing failure.
If you want this is a thread that has some info, and will lead to too others, one for the 3 phase system, and the other for the single phase system.

Thank you for your quick replies. The main difference between the 2 R/Rs is the old one had a pigtail type plug+the newer one gets plug in it.This will help a lot, though.I`m hoping to get it running today so I can take my Honey riding w/me.Thanks again guys!
