When I was in the USAF(1966-1974),I worked on F-4C/D/E/F&G versions of the Phantom II at my last duty station.

when replacing the relays in the Amament Control Relay Panel, the defective relay was removed and the new one was installed using non insulated butt splices and then was covered with a heat shrinkable closed end tube.

This made the connection vibration and water resistant.
The butt splice was crimped using a Nicopress 17BA non insulated crimping tool.

These butt splices come in many sizes, it depends on how many wires you need in the connection. You can do what I call a stub crimp where all wires come together on one side of the splice, or do it the traditional way by having the wires come in from both sides.

For repairing the alternator output wiring, I'd suggest removing the insulation from the wires, crimp on a butt splice and then cover it with a good grade on heat shrink tubing.Probably 14 gauge appliance wiring will be more durable than what's available from the local auto parts store as it has better insulation for higher temperature work.
