Advancer Springs...

Couldn't seem to find anything with the search feature...

I've noticed that since my last tuneup, that my timing marks (especially at idle), are bouncing around more and more. After a quick diagnosis, I've found my advancer springs are getting pretty weak/sloppy.

Am I going to find a terribly large change in the accelleration curve if I nip off the half coil and bend a new one up to strengthen the spring?

I can just replace them, but I'm curious if there is any benefit to shortening them, so full advance happens a little sooner... or later rather?

Cheers.

I just went through this and ended up making new springs from some I got at Orchard Supply. Don't match perfectly (advances up a little sooner than stock) but the idle setting is rock solid now and it runs way better. Can't believe Kawi doesn't sell those forking springs.

The factory springs in mine were hardened and you would not be able to cut a coil and shorten it. I bought some springs and they were also very hard to work but eventually did it.

That will be way too much pre-load on the spring if you cut that much off. Try this first: take off one spring and just close the end loops up a tiny bit. That usually tightens it up enough for me to get closer to the original advance curve. If I do both springs I usually end up tighter than the original advance curve. If yours are very loose you may need to do both.
