2.2 or 3 ohm dyna coils?

Hi, I was on Z1E looking at their selection of ignition coils for my KZ1000-K2. I could get the original 2.4 ohnm coils, or for 50 bucks less I could get some dynas. Unless there is a reason why the stockers are better I think I would get the dynas as they are smaller, lighter and cheaper. Would the 2.2 or 3 ohm coils be more suitable a replacement for my stock 2.4 ohm coils?

Ive got the 3 0hm coils for my K2 but otakar told me that the 2.2 ohm coils were the right ones. The 3 ohm coils work fine. I guess I didnt really answer your question.

Both are suitable.

The 2.2 will most likely give more spark energy in the higher RPM range. If the bike is properly tuned and the motor is in good condition, this should not make any noticable difference over the 3 ohm coils.

The down side is that the 2.2's will waste more electrical power at lower RPMs. They will also require the igniter to handle more peak current than the 3 ohms. This may affect longevity on a stock igniter.

If you are using the DYna S, or may use it in the future, definitely get the 3-ohms. The Dyna S is not rated to use the 2.2 ohm coils. (It gets more spark energy by extending the dwell, instead of achieving higher peak current.)

Thanks, I was planning on getting the Dyna S eventually, so I will get the 3 ohm. Should I keep my spark plug gap where it is with the new coils, or can I open it up a bit?

Even if the coils can handle the extra gap, the igniter may not, so I would keep the gap stock until you get the dyna S.

+1 A higher resistamnce coil is always safe to use, lower maybe depends how much lower. Going from 2.4Ohm down to 2.2 Ohm is probably fine because that's only a 10% change. Going up to 3 Ohms, you probably couldn't feel the difference unless this is a racing engine that lives at redline.

So lets say I get the 3 ohm coils, then eventually the Dyna S. I recently replaced my stator, would the new ignition system require a new R/R? Boy, spending money on bikes is fun!

No. At least, it shouldn't if the reg/rec is in good shape.

The Dyna S does use quite a bit more current than the stock ignition.

Here are some rough averavge numbers:
Stock ignition: 3 to 4 amps .
Dyna S with 3-ohm coils: 8.5 to 10 amps.

(The current draw changes under different conditions.)

dang! So would my non-higher output stator handle the power needs?

It seems to work ok with most KZ's.

I prefer the stock ignition (with newer coils) just because it puts less stress on the charging system, wires, and switches. I use the 3-ohm Accel coils which are similar to the Dyna 3-ohm coils.
