Headlights out...Maybe use automotive style bulb??
02 Aug 2009 20:40
My Little KZ100 has a case of Highbeamonly Itis.
Its a sealed beam bulb and it looks to be almost unobtainable to find new. Just like everything else on this bike.
I hate to buy a $70 30+ year old used part and not know how long it will last.
Anyhow, I noticed my original headlight has a actual bulb soldered into the headlight housing.
It looks as if the parts store has some high/low beam replacement bulbs that may actually fit into the hole the original bulb is soldered into.
The headlight is a goofy 6.5" style and has all the brackets permanently welded onto the back side of the light.
Has anyone ever been able to make one of these replacement bulbs work out? I doubt I would be able to solder it into the back of the housing like factory but maybe I could Rubber Band it in like some of the older Brit bikes had?
Watchu guys think? Goofy Idea?

I would probably jury rig on a standard 7" round headlight housing from another model to make life simpler.

Get one of the H4 conversions. You'll have a better light pattern and a replaceable bulb which means you can buy one of those newer style ultra bright bulbs and put in it.

I cannot remember what size I grabbed this morning. But I ended up melting the solder off the original bulb and then breaking the brasss off end off of it and that allowed the bulb to fall into the headlight itself.
I Just Shook the pee out of the headlight until the bulb inside shattered enough and the shards fell out of the hole.
Instead of soldering it to the housing I plan on using a O-ring to make a rubber band style clasp to hold the headlight in. The bulb I have hase a nice wide flange on the end to help secure it.
I'll post some pics tonight.

My Original headlight has all the bracketry welded onto the back of the housing. And it is a 6.5" style headlight. The one at the Zone would not fit into the chrome ring.
I assume even if it did it would be a absolute pain in the rear to fasten into the housing.
