soledoid CLICK (ground?)

Got the 810 in the frame and thought i had all the electrical junk hiiked up. hit the starter button and the solenoid just clicks. I tried to arc the 2 poles, still no starter. then i tried hooking the jumper right to the starter lug where the cable connects....still no start. Could this be a bad ground, or no ground at all. where should i run the negative bat cable to? the frame or the engine?....

Im good with WrENCHES not wire STRIPPERS.

thanks all.

What's the battery condition? Have you tried jumping from a known good battery like in a car(non running engine)?

You should fully charge the bike battery, and then have it load tested at a bike shop.

Sounds like the starter itself. The starter gets its ground from being bolted to the case. The battery ground is, of course, that big cable that should be running to the case. The fact that the solenoid clicks, means you're getting at least some ground from the battery. If the ground was bad from the battery, I'd expect the solenoid to chatter.

I'd check the starter brushes.

Check that the ground wire from the frame to the motor is hooked up. It's near the kick starter on the lower right of the motor.

Congrats.

Now check your other wires and connectors for similar problems... what are the chances that this is the only problem on a 30 + year old bike... don't ask how I know.

Consider cleaning all connector contacts and adding non-conductive grease found a most auto shops.

Best of success. :)
