Help! KZ1000B2 Switches w/pics

Would it be possible to use the reproduction switches that are sold for the 900's on a 78 1000LTD? They look identical, except for the headlight on/off switch on the right switch assembly.

The color codes may not match up but a few minutes with a ohm meter or a self powered test light, and some tape to mark what's what should have you ready to install the switches.

Might need longer harness length for the oem LTD handlebar.

Good Luck! :)

I also noticed the left side switch does not have the built in hazard button that the LTD does have.

These are the switches under "Handlebar Switches" on the Redline site if anyone was wondering.

On the electrical diagram HERE ...Does the connections coming off the left hand switch assembly use a bullet type terminal pin to connect to the main wiring harness?

I'm trying to find out if a switch from a 81 650 will work. As far as I can tell the wires all match, same functions, yet the 650 uses a 9 pin connector to attach to the main harness. I'm pretty sure it will work, just not 100%. I would need to get some B1 Male terminals from Z1, correct? The 650 is below.

If you can't get a matching 9 pin connector, you could go to individual bullet style connectors (male and female). I'd use the heatshrinkable crimped butt connectors(splices) for a moisture resistant wire extension if needed.

The following websites have motorcycle electrical connectors:
1. www.easternbeaver.com
2. www.vintageconnections.com
3. www.electricalconnection.com
4. www.z1enterprises.com

I believe the KZ1000B2 has internal wiring for the handlebars. I wonder if that throws a wrench in the gears for me. I guess the wires pass straight into a hole in the handlebar so no wire is shown. I hate that the bike is one state away while I try to plan on fixing things like this. I suppose the bikes that use external wiring will have the wires exit the switch assembly differently(outside) than the ones with internal wiring(inside, straight into the handlebar)? Anyone know this?

I'm not sure about internal wiring, but if you do have to extend the wires by splicing, stagger the splices so they are not all in one area, making the bundle smaller and easier to pass through the handlebars.

Watch out for internal, sharp metal burrs that will skin the insulation from the wires when you start rewiring.

Thanks for the tip. Hopefully I will not have to splice. I'm learning a good bit through this; however, if only I could find someone that could just restore the paint on the switches I would not have to worry about wiring at all.
