is it worth replacing the factory ignition on the 82 ltd1000...or would a simple coil upgrade be sufficient??i've heard the kaw ignitions are pretty well built..

Depends on what you want to do. For a stock engine, the stock electronic ignition is more than adequate, and is very efficient on power.

Are you having ignition problems? If the coils are original they may be on their way out, especially if they have tiny cracks on them.

What ohm coils should be used for this bike.
Thanks

I would suspect the coils are 2.5 ohms as that is what the majority of KZ electronic ignition coils are. The only exception may be some of the 79 and maybe 80 models with electronic ignition.

My understanding is don't go lower in coil resistance from stock but go up. 2.5 to 3.0 ohm should work o.k.

Yes, like MFolks says, 3.0 ohms should be fine with the stock electronic ignition.

If you go too low, you exceed the safe current levels for the electronics and they can burn out.

If you go too high, like 4 or 5 ohms, you will start to lose spark energy because the dwell is designed for lower resistance coils.

Thanks Guys I read somewhere that with the 3 ohm coils I would get weak spark. Sounds like my coils are ok.
