Points to factory electronic ignition conversion
10 Jun 2008 16:17
I have a complete factory electronic ignition off an 80 KZ1000 LTD parts bike that Id like to put on one of my non original motor Z1's. Has anyone done this that could shoot me some leads as to whats involved in it? Didnt have any luck with a search, thanks for any help

its a direct bolt on swap.you will need a 1.5 ohm resistor in the coil power wire though.as per clymer manual.

Radio Shack does have some resistors, but you may have to use a 1-ohm instead. Make sure it big, like 25 to 50 watts.
But are you sure you need it? If the coils are 4-ohm points coils you don't need the resistor. If the coils measure 2.5 or higher, you most likely don't need the resistor. The resistor was supposedly used with 1.5-ohm coils.
What coils are you using?

This is what I thought, also. My twin has the stock I.E. and there was no resistor, w/stock coils. I haven't used one on either the, replacement, 3ohm or the current, 2.2ohm dyna coils. I believe the 2.2's are recommended for the CDI type I.E., at least for the twins, don't know about the 4cyls, but 3ohm works.

Its a whole cobbled up factory electronic assymbly someone put on a 77 KZ1000 parts bike. The coils meaured 2.5 and 2.9 ohms. Its a wiring nightmare that I want to clean up when I use it on the Z1 with the 77 KZ1000 motor. The coils have caps that remove so you can change the plug wires and they look factory. I dont see any resistor on the setup and I did have it running but I have no title for it and its a crapper

You can go to any auto parts store and tell um you want a 1.5 ohm resistor and they can fix you up.the shop manuals specify 1.5 ohm. resistor for this ign. setup.its primary function being to keep the voltage from spiking to the coils and pickups.if you get tired of messing with it let me know i would like to have one.

Im not sure what I need, Im getting more confused. One guy says I need one ohm coil another says different. One says I need a resitor another says I dont. My coils are the stock ones that were on the whole electronic conversion. They measure 2.5 and 2.9. Id just like a definitve answer of what I need. I plan to go wd's relay conversion too. Electronics are not my strong suit but Im not helpless either. I apreciate all the help but Im just confused as to what I need for sure. Im going to meausre the coils on some of my others and see what I get. I have an 80 LTD with electronic to check too plus one with green Dyna coils & a Dyna S.

The KZ900/1105 motors green Dyna S pickup with the green Dyna coils measure 3.2 ohms each

Dyna S uses 3-ohm coils or higher.
Factory Kaw electronic ignition uses 2.5-ohm coils or higher without resistors.
Early factory Kaw electronic ignitions from 79 and 80 are said to have used lower resistance coils around 1.5 ohms. I haven't seen it personally. Those systems used resistors to make up the difference to 2.5 ohms.
Either way, old coils will eventually go bad, and so may the igniter. But you can make your own igniter for about $30 and use any new or used coil 2.5-ohm or higher. If you use your current setup without resistor, and the igniter blows up, then it was probably weak anyway. Here's the plans to make your own:
