Choosing the right spark plugs
19 Jan 2008 06:09
Posted this in the engine section. Maybe it's a ignition question as well!
Can't seem to find out what I need. Clymer says the bike needs NGK B7ES, but the website at Z1 gives me B6ES plugs when I search for this particular bike. I read a bit about the higher the number the colder the plug, but this doesn't mean anything to me! Maybe it has to do with the temperatures I'll be riding in? Can you tell I don't know squat!
Any comments? I'm sure both will work just fine, I just need your opinions please, thanks!

The Kawasaki factory shop manual specifies B7ES for your bike:)

I'd run B6ES in the winter time if it is colder than 50 deg
50 - 80 degrees F B7ES
70 - 90 degrees F B8ES
over 80 and long road trips B9ES
I have had great luck with the "eg" plugs too. they have a fine wire electrode. in a ngk red box they are 5 bucks a piece but require less voltage to jump a spark.
ambient temp and engine load determine the heat range required.
Having too cold of a plug will NEVER HURT the engine but it will take longer to warm up to operating temperature.
I think the goal on a air cooled engine is to have the coldest plug possible but still get the tip to 550 deg. F which is the temp the plug self cleans the carbon off. and the least amount of heat is transfered into the rest of the engine.

Does anyone know where there is a Canadian dealer for ND?
I'd love to try a set of X24ES-U's for my 550.
