this is really gonna make me sound dumb, but can you NOT put 3 ohm coils on that bike? Everywhere I look I see that the 'late-model' coils are 2.2 ohm...
and also...does it matter that I'm running points?

There are many variables. I'm not familiar with the P bikes.

The following assumes the dwell angle is about 180 degrees on the 78 KZ1000P, but I don't know that for a fact (most points KZ's are 180 deg.)

If you have a ballast resistor, you'd have to know what resistance the ballast is to make the right choice.

If you don't have a ballast resistor, and you're running points, you want 3.0-ohm to 4.0-ohm coils. The lower the ohms, the faster the points will pit and wear. 3.0-ohm is about as low as you'd want to go. If you ever convert to electronic ignition, the 3.0-ohm coils will work for that too, so the 3.0 is a good choice for the most future options. If you know you will never get rid of the points, the 4.0-ohm coils will make the points last longer.

If you have a ballast, and are considering going to electronic ignition, the ballast will be removed and the 3-ohm coils will work.

So for most applications you'll want the 3-ohm coils and remove any ballast.

Most people get the Dyna 3-ohm or Accel 3-ohm. They have to be full-size coils. You can't use the "mini" coils.

Here are the Dyna's:

Here are the Accel's with the wire kit:

The Accel's cost more, but I like them. I usually wait for better deals on Ebay or elsewhere.

thanks....what about spark wires....I've heard conflicting arguments between suppression and copper core. Right now I have copper...

To reduce RF noise you would use suppression wire, or resistor plugs, or resistor caps. The RF noise shouldn't affect a points ignition, or your bike in general. It may affect more sophisticated electronic ignitions and other electronic devices.

The suppression doesn't affect the spark too much. A good motor would show no difference. The only time spark energy makes much difference is in a motor in bad shape or bad carburetion, or a poorly designed motor.
