Try to use a 5w40 oil if you have extreme cold weather. The difference was outstanding in my case.

No sure what Bump Starting means. Does it push start ok, but not with the electric starter is this what you mean?
I have found that if the starting is dragging it will not produce the correct rotation speed and the bike can be hard to start, when you push start the bike you get a much faster engine rotation and it will start right up. I am guessing this bike does not have a kick starter?
I had a KZ 650 a few years back that would start right up with the kick starter, but was hard to start with the electric stater, answer was to rebuild the stater as it was dragging.

Bump starting is the same as push starting. I think you're right about it being the starter. Often the starter will spin, then make a grinding noise, then sometimes will fire the engine up, sometimes not. Could this be the starter clutch? or the starter itself? It still fires right up when the bike is warmed up though

Sounds like the classic starter clutch failure symptoms. If you decide to replace it there are some good links available on the process. Let me know if you want them. Ed

Those links would be great. I'm gonna consult my mechanic friend and see what he thinks before i start tearing into it.

The only thing that makes me think it might not be the starter clutch is that it fires right up when the bike has been warmed up.
