Yeah Bigkevin, it turns out Vernons prob was cured by resetting a tight point gap so after your done be sure and check your point gap and timing!

Would concur with seanbarney41 about checking point gap and timing.
Remember to first clean contacts, and then set the gaps, both before adjusting the ignition timing.
Here's a pic that may be helpful.

Where contacts are pitted, it's sometimes easy to smooth their mating surfaces by using a strip of very fine sandpaper, folded so there's grit on both sides of the strip.
Then place the strip between closed contacts, and pull it back and forth, to simultaneously dress both contacts. If additional pressure is desired, just use your fingers to press the contacts slightly tighter together while pulling the strip back and forth.
It shouldn't require many pulls.
A standard "points file" may be used instead of the sandpaper strip, but chances are that the sandpaper method will be deemed preferable.
Next --- Spray some contact cleaner (or similar non-residue electrical cleaner) on the contacts.
Use a thickness (feeler) gauge to adjust the gap.
Then repeat application of contact cleaner.
The contacts should now be smooth, mating evenly, with proper gap, and perfectly clean.
Proceed with ignition timing.

I tried to adjust the points on my 76 KZ900 for the first time. Am I supposed to see sparks across the points when trying to start the bike ?
