No throttle cable!! HELP!I
19 Jun 2010 11:27
I need a replacement throttle cable for a 1982 KZ750 four cylinder 750cc. The old cable must be frayed inside and sticks at a higher than idle RPM. Kaw dealer says that none are available and that '82 was a unique throttle cable, not used on any other year!
Can anyone supply the needed cable, or point me in the right direction?

Where two throttle cables are fitted, sometimes the other cable (if in better condition) may be used as a replacement.
MotionPro offers custom cables in almost any length. Just need length of sheath and amount of exposed inner cable.
Has a cable luber been tried? Or the over-night funnel drip method?
Sometimes the throttle grip mechanism gets crunchy, and needs cleaning and re-lubing inside where the cables attach.
Good Fortune!

The throttle grip tube is supposed to smoothly rotate back and forth over the handlebar.
Usually no lube is needed in this area. Just a clean, grit-free, fitment.
Some of these are unbelievably encrusted.
Another thing to check is to assure the end of the rubber handlebar grip isn't rubbing against the end of the handlebar.

Re: No throttle cable!! HELP!I

I and my mechanic have tried all the ideas that were offered by the responses, but none of those recommendations helped.
The cable still binds and we believe that this is caused by fraying, inside the cable casing.
Since it appears that the 1982 style cable was only used for one year, no one has a replacement cable for sale at any price.
I sent for and received two cables that sellers promised would work, but neither had ends that mated up to my bike.
We are going to the motorcycle salvage yard to try to fine an entire throttle unit that will work on my bike, to include the handle bar grip unit and cable. We will attempt to swap out the whole thing. Any recommendations on which models may have a unit that will work on my bike?
Best,
Steven

54012-1058, and 54012-1114 are 2 cables shown for a 82 KZ750 E2/E3 model. Is one of those models yours? There is also an H3 LTD, and R-1 GPZ, M1 CSR.
Which bike you got and have you called Z1 for availability of Kaw #'s above?

My motorcycle is a KZ750E2.
I have been in contact with the Z people and they tell me that the cable is unique to that year of 1982 and that they do not have the cable to sell.

What about the motion Pro Cable they list? Says E3, yours is E2, wonder what the difference would be? They list 2 cables from Kawasaki supposed to be E2 & E3, the #'s I supplied, so is yours a push/ pull two cable system?

The throttle cable on my KZ750E2 is a single cable. See photos. I sent the same photos to Z and they said that they did not have the cable and could not get it.

Or maybe its this one

Judging from your photo's, this should be it. Score it fast before some one else.

Re: No throttle cable!! HELP!I

If you look closely at my photos and the photo on ebay, the curved piece is different, at the handlebar end. Plus, the ebay ad notes that the cable is for 1980 and 1981 and they probably know what they are talking about. Z sent me the very same cable, as shown in that ebay ad and it would not work. My mechanic tried to adapt it to my bike and only succeeded in ruining the cable, so that it could not be returned.
What I need to do, is to find a wrecked 1982 KZ750E2 and buy the cable off of it. Or, get an entire handlebar grip unit, with cable, that will work on my bike and swap out the whole thing. I can save the old parts, just in case I find original type parts later on.
