Backfiring through carb may result from too tight clearance on the intake valve.

what about the idling issue that the other guy had when he decel to a stop? if you bog the enging down with the clutch it will stay down at normal. sometimes. could that valve clearance be causing the backfiring too?

While backfiring through carb may result from too tight clearance on the intake valve, popping through the exhaust when decelerating may result from too lean carb pilot circuit.

Racing idle may result from an air leak from such places as cracked or worn or torn carb holder, loose clamp (holding carb in the holder), leaking vacuum cap (plug).

Good Fortune! :)

how can I correct the lean carb? would you think that cleaning the carbs is in order after it sat for a few years?
