This would mean that the pilot circuit and the enrichening circuit is blocked. You will have to disassemble and unblock them. Remove and clean the pilot jets and do the same with the pilot screws. Also do all the passages leading to these two jets.

OK, we're back. Spent some time at the track with the Ducati.
Today finally some time for the Zed.

Cleaned the pilot circuit with carb cleaner (took out the needles) and blew everything out. Same for Choke, bowls and main jets. Took out all gas from the tank and bowls and filled her up with new Shell V Power.

Still not much luck with starting though. Not a single hickup. Just nothing...
But if I spray a bit of gasoline in the airbox it starts. So ignition seems fine.
Only after spraying a tiny bit of gasoline in the airbox the engine start revving up to max RPM. If I peek into the airbox after taking out the filter I can see the diaphragm valves swinging full upwards after the engine starts.

After this the bike starts on his own the next few hours (and revs to max)

I did not change the gaskets nor o-rings anywhere. Airleak?

OK, just found out that I have cleaned the pilot screws. Not the jets. Will do that this week.

Hope this will fix the starting issue...

Anyone ideas in regards the revving up to max rpm?

Mine does the same thing. I have no clue on how to adjust anything.
My friend is a mechanic, so I assumed he would be able to tune them and I tore them apart and went to town cleaning them, and new kits.

Bad move, it's very rich now, and sluggish. Hard to start, and won't idle if the choke is off (even warm). Every single jet was brand new, and did a sync on the carbs. Still nothing.

Could someone point me to a thread where I can read up on this stuff? I can't seem to find a good structured write up on tuning mikuni's. I have a 77 KZ650B.

Thanks.

EDIT: I should probably note that the bike was sitting for approx. 10 years, and the slides were so gummed it was hard to move them at all. So much crud in there, but all the parts are shiny again.

Took the carbs from the bike tonight. Discovered that the throttle cable wasn't mounted well. Could explain the revving as it was way too tight.
The pilot jets are ready for an overnighter in the carb cleaner...

I am just going to give you my experience with the revving. I have a stock '81 Kaw CSR 1000 with factory BS34s. As I have posted elsewhere, my carbs sat for a long time with water and old gas in them. I am too cheap to buy rebuild kits for them, so I have cleaned them the best I can.
In cold weather, my motor will rev up to about 3k if I do not push the choke shaft in some as it is warming up.
The temp range now is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit at night, up to about 85 degrees during the day, and my bike's warmup is perfect. If I pull the knob out all the way, it is too rich, and it will lope and almost die, unless I push the knob part way in right after it starts. It never revs up high in warm weather.....

First bike ever at 14 years old was 1969 Honda CL 175.
Bought a brand new Honda CM400T at 16 years old in 1979.

Just stepped out of bed and had a brainwave.... I am such an #ss.

After teh first drive last week I have changed the handlebars. I must have done something wrong there with the throttle.
Now the throttle cable is constantly pulling the valve open for 80%.
I now assume that this causes my two problems:

1. Not starting because of lack of vacuum.
2. When it starts with some extra gas sprayed in the airbox by myself it starts and revs up as it is told to do by the throttle position

Have to got to work now. :( Will rebuild tonight. Keep you posted!

I personally prefer to step away and have a couple brews - lubes up the old noggin. But sleep will work sometimes too!

The bike manual should have info on adjusting the throttle linkage both at the carbs and at the handlebars.

Back to square one...

Fixed the throttle cable issue. But...

Still having major issues to get the thing started. Installed everything back together including airfilter housing etc. But she won't start. Starts only if I spray in some extra gas.

Whens she the finally runs she reacts to the Choke (if pulled out revving goes up) But why doesn't she then fires up on her own?????

Other feature came also back, that is when she is standing for a day and I hit the starter button she fires up for half a second to die out again and then won't start. As I had got this behavior before pulling everything out, I am sure it must mean something...

I am on wits end. Anyone a clue?!?
