73 Z1 pilot's long or short barrel ?
20 Mar 2010 10:33
I need to order pilots for my 73 carbs. The carbs have the added rib and the 17mm drain plug. On the flange thay are stamped 147 with a 3 under it. I do know the pilot threads are different from a set off a 75 z1. 75 Z1 carbs the pilot hole threads are counter sunk a little were as my carbs the threads are flush
I'm thinkin I need the long barrel as shown on the left
yes/no?

Sudco Mikuni manual 4th ed shows VM28/213 (6 holes) pilot jet for 1972 Z1 Mikuni carb, with a pic that looks like the longer shouldered version (as above pictured on the left) . From the 1972 date, would infer this being the very earliest pilot jet in the first unribbed 17mm nut Z1 carb.
The Sudco manual next shows VM28/486 (8 holes) pilot jet for 1973~78 Z1 Mikuni carb, with a pic that looks like the shorter shouldered version. The 1973~78 date suggests this being the later pilot jet in the first unribbed 17mm nut Z1 carb, and in future carb versions through 1978.
From the photos in Z1E's listings:
Z1E's Z1 carb kit includes both style pilot jets (6 hole and 8 hole) and two slightly different style bowl gaskets (see below).
Z1E's KZ900 carb kit pilot jet looks like the same 8 hole pilot jet.
Based on above, would wild guess the 8 hole pilot jet (shorter shouldered version) would fit the ribbed 17mm nut carb.
Meanwhile, would await better more certain advice.
Good Fortune!
