Is there suposed to be a tube coming out of the pitcock into the tank for the on position. Mine has the 2 holes going into the tank but I can't figure out how it's got a reserve of gas

the petcock has two feed tubes up in the tank one is shorter than the other that one is your reserve.

That would explain why when I ran out of gas the other day the reserve did nothing to help me not walk my bike 300 yards to the gas station.

I am assuming that the larger hole in the center is the one the tube for the main fuel pick up

Yes, there is one tube that sticks up for the main feed. When fual level goes past that you start sputtering at 70 mph. Turning petcock to reserve opens uo lower hole and allows you to continue on for approx .7 gallons. (The tube slides up and down in the screen), pull tube down and then push tube into larger hole (only fits in one hole) then push in screen assembly until flush with petcock. Are you missing this piece?

sounds like yours is missing the stand pipes. you might look at z1 for a new petcock or just really watch your mileage.

How do you separate this for further cleaning of the petcock?

I still can't get mine to shutoff completely when the motor isn't running.

Any suggestions on what I missed during the last two cleanings? Rebuild kit didn't help. I wonder if the spring inside just isn't strong enough to return the diaphram to shutoff position. That's the one part that didn't come in the rebuild kit. :(

The plastic screen and tube is just hand pressed in, a little wiggle will remove it. As far as your leaking goes, I had the same problem. Here is what I found with the K&L kit.

K&L rebuild kit

Ordering OEM diaphram (which includes plastic spacer) for $12 cured my problem, seals perfect.
