80 550 LTD carb question
18 Jun 2009 18:09
just finished a "restore" of my favorite bike from highschool. It was a 50 dollar basket case that I ended up putting a new 4 into 1 pipe and K&N pods on the TK carbs. After she warms up it idles pretty good and drives fine till about 1/2 throttle and leans out. Still has the stock jets in it and I am looking for a ballpark on a main jet size to go to for this setup. thanks, shane.

Great little bikes but the early ones had carb issues. The TK carbs were a shot term deal with Kawasaki. I think it was 83 they moved to CV carbs on the 550.
Put the airbox back on it. Before you do, see if the relief plates in the choke plates are all still there. They sometimes came loose and got sucked through the motor.
If you're heart is set on pods, you can try Mikuni main jets. Best bet for all around is just put the airbox back on it.

i don't have the original airbox, nor a lot of other parts, this was a basket case that i put back together and decided to do pods and 4into1 since it had neither intake nor exhaust with it. i have links for the jets, just looking for a recomended size for this setup. thanks.

go about 3 or 4 sizes bigger and raise your needle heights by at least one clip or if they arent adjustable put about a one mm thick spacer washer underneath the clip it will richen the mid-range up quite a bit probably enough to get over your stumble.
