Stuck Slides?
14 Jun 2009 12:00
Trying to clean a set of carbs off of a '79 650sr that has sat for a long time, and 3 of the 4 slides appear to be stuck. Although everything was pretty gunked up nothing else has put up much of a fight. How can I get these unstuck without breaking out the BFH? I think this is the stock set that came with the bike, (Mikuni vm24ss) but the i.d. of the throat size on the motor side is 26mm and it does have the single accelerator pump. Let me know if I'm not providing enough info.

Would soak with PBBlaster or Kroil overnight, several days or a week if necessary util they loosen up.
Good Luck!

S, I think you'd find spray carb cleaner a quicker solution, as the gunk is old fuel and penetrating oils will do little to disolve. a portion of your' stickage is probly needles glued to emulsion tubes, I'd remove main jets and squirt up there also. pacience and restraint easily advised but in scant supply in my case.. Luck G

Thanks guys. I've used about a can of carb cleaner so far and they seem to be loosening a bit. Squirted some w-d as well, I guess it was wishful thinking that 10 years of sitting was going to move that easily.
