need advise
07 Jun 2009 10:41
beleive this is a carb problem but not sure! For the past three and a half monthes or so my Kaw has ran flawlessly then four days ago after starting off in first as i was adding throttle it started bogging down, like starving for fuel??give it more throttle, reving more rpms and it comes out of it,does this in second and third and after 30-40 mph comes out of it seems ok, All 4 headers are hot, plugs have 200 miles or so but some what carboned up,Clymers book says (engine misses-all speeds) ignition wire connections, point gaps, spring tensions.(at low or midrange)clean carb, low speed jet & circuit, slide needle. these are TK22s but i really am not that good at diagnosis, far as i can tell its not missing, rough running, and when this is going on if i choke it doesn"t seem to make any difference, need advice, where do i go from here.

Would test run with fuel tank cap ajar (not fully snapped down) to determine whether same problem persists. Thinking possible fuel starvation due to obstructed vent in cap.
Good Luck!

Besides obstructed vent in cap, possible sources of fuel starvation also include clogged screens on petcock pickup tubes inside fuel tank. Fuel may contain suspended grit/crud hovering around and collecting on the pickup screens. Consider removing petcock and cleaning the screens, and also removing the fuel tank and flushing it out with fresh gasoline.
Or maybe the inline fuel filter is clogged and needs replacing.
With ample fuel supply in tank, cap snapped down tight, fuel line disconnected from exit nipple of in-line filter, and petcock turned on PRI, supposed to be ample continuous fuel flow from exit nipple of in-line filter. Absent continuous fuel flow from exit nipple of in-line filter, would suspect either the in-line filter is clogged, or the petcock pickup screens are clogged.

Two ways to determine if you have electronic ignition:
1.Remove the CD sized cover on the right side of the crankshaft(foward of the clutch cover) and see if there are either ignition points or pick up coils.
2. Look around the area on the left side beneath the seat looking for an aluminum cased box with cooling fins that has IC IGNITER on it. This is the electronic item that gives your coils their grounds to fire them.

After assuring ample clean fuel supply to carbs, would next perform compression test and check valve clearances before addressing carbs.
And would also visually confirm spark quality with plugs removed and held against the engine head while cranking over the engine in neutral with ignition switch turned ON.
Look for fat blue sparks.
It's usually best to leave carbs until last, because even perfect carbs can't compensate for a deficiency in fuel supply, compression, or spark quality.
Good Luck!

Ya know Kaws are like fords, look for something simple ! Because it was acting badly thought it had to be more complicated but took the simple route and now she is screaming like a banshee, back to 100 and 10 per cent. It was the freakin fuel filter ! But I took the steps of emptying the tank, removing same, pulling manual petcock and cleaning screen, cleaning tank and at the local cycle joint paid 3.73 cents for a new in-line filter, last step pop the plugs out clean and check n set gap reinstall. again to all my brothers in arms at KZR that gave advice...Kawickrice, Patton, MFolks, and Timebomb much thanks, the next rounds on me!!!!
