Pilot screw adjustment

I am rebuilding the carbs on my 80 KZ750 Twin and was woundering if any one knew off hand what to set the pilot screw at. I know about counting the turns in til it stops and then doing the reverse when I put them together but I just wanted to know if 1 1/2 turns out is enough. I have been chasing a running issue with this bike for 2 years and I think most of it is in the valve clearance which I am waiting for shims to be shipped to me. I know about the colortune tool and I plan on getting it soon, but I don't have the money right now.

My 79 750 twin has BS38 carbs and they set up about 2 or 2 1/4 turns out from just bottomed out.
