79 kz650 airbox replacement
05 May 2009 17:26
Recently rec'd 79 KZ650C and in the process of cleaning it up. I want to replace the air box with pod filters. Currently running with Sankei 2055 4 into 2 exhaust. What recommendations are there for rejetting. Also wiring is a mess. Does anyone have replacement wiring diagram to replace the wire harness. Harness I now have is a wreck, a lot of patch work. I'm not even sure it is for this bike. Any help would be appreciated since riding season is here.

Put the stock airbox back on you'll be so much happier with it. PODS = headache take it from someone who learned the hard way

I know a lot of guys here have pods with no problems but most guys find it a PITA to get proper jetting and as Patton said they are subject to high/low pressure areas which can cause side covers to fly off, side drafts from other vehicles affect performance, water ingestion from rain or just washing bike and puts more strain on the carb holders. The plus side to pods are 5 minute carb removal! Personally I think a stock air box with a K&N filter will flow almost as good as pods. Pods do have a place, when an engine is highly modified (big bore kit, cams, etc)they are necessary for max performance. On a relatively stock motor they will cause a slight drop in bottom end with a slight boost in top end IF jetted properly. They look cool, sound cool but just not for me.

Well I never did get the jetting right always had a bog.
heavy winds made the bike run poorly always
run up along side of a semi truck and you'll see what I mean
yes you can remove your carbs quicker but so what I've done it so many times now with the airbox on that it really doesn't take much more then 5 minutes to take them off just a little harder to put back on.
I've done the pilot jets new main jets tried different needle positions too many times to count. all in all the bike runs best with the stock airbox for me at least.
