VM24SS pilot circuit question

OK, another basic question on my stock VM24SS carbs on the 78650B.....

all the books show an actual pilot screw and recommend a setting for it. Mine just have a hole there that is capped off way down in the hole, and I have the low speed air screws.

My assumption is that I have California specific carbs???

No some 78 KZ650s used pilot screw type with the screws adjusted below the carbs, some used air screw type with the screws on top of the carbs. I have 2 1978 KZ650s bought right here in Colorado, and one has pilots, one has air screws. The air screws are much easier to work with. The air screws let more air in leaning the mixture as they are turned out. About 1 1/2 turn out is a good starting point. The pilots let more fuel in if you turn them out richening the mixture, so the 2 types are exact opposite in how they tune.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

the pilots are only available in 2.5 increments.. So the suppliers show 15, then 17.5

has anyone run a 17.5 on a 650 with pods and kerker???

Check out this post on what other 650 riders are using for jet sizes with different set ups: forums.kz650.info/index.php?topic=1853.0

Also some other info in the carb section on the different carbs used and tuning.
