what is the best way to remove the plug over the pilot screw on a Keihin type carburator from a 1981 KZ750H2. The book just says to "use a punch or scriber to deform the plug then remove it." I know parts for this bike are hard to find and costly when found so I don't want to do anything to hurt the carbs. But the plugs do have to come out. So any good tips on removing them?

Soo... Just drill them? What if I drill too deep and hit that brass screw that is so important? How deep should I drill? Or Could I use the back up bits that I have?

Burk, actually a good question. Many carbs have been hurt in removing these plugs. plugs come in brass or aluminum. depths vary from 1 to 4mm in depth. jet kits usually come with sharp drill bits and a sheet metal screw for extraction, via prizing.. the risk is drilling thru plug, engaging fuel screw and driving screw into carb body possibly damaging body & or screw. I may over state hazards , but for a 1st timer, I would rec. using l/h drill bit, and drilling at seam of plug, (as opposed to center) stopping frequently and atempting to lever out. the thought of beating on a carb to deform plug leaves me cold. luck g

take a 1/8 drill bit drill into it and then use a no. 8 or 10 wood screw and then just pull it out with a set of pliers easy as that just be careful drilling into the plug.

Make up a drill stop to prevent drilling too deep. A small dowel with a 1/8" hole in it cut to the length you need should work.
