Changing gear ratio on a shaftie
27 Nov 2006 07:24
Is it possible to change the ratio on a shaftie, the same way you do it on a chain drive? I understand that there is no traditional front/rear sprockets..well actually, is there a front sprocket of any kind?
Can the bevel gears be changed in any way?
I find that cruising at 60mph I'm around 5500rpm, which I find kinda high..I don't know if its because I'm out of tune though. Could that be a reason for it?
thanks.

I have the same bike and your rpm/mph is about right.
As for changing the ratios, that could only be done by changing the six gear to give you a more overdrive like ratio and I doubt there is a gear box you could swap one out of into this box.
I think you'll find she is what she is.

My chain drive kz550 LTD does 60 mph at almost 5500rpm exactly. It has trouble breaking 7500 RPM (around 85mp) in top gear and you'll have to kick it down to 5th to go faster.
I find 60mph to be quite smooth and comfortable at 5500. Only the cramped foot pegs bother me at that speed. My experience is limited but these small inline 4's seem to run pretty smooth.

I would think that it could be done, lke changing the gears in a car diff. the biggest question is if anyone ever made anything that will swap in....if all else fails, get a taller tire (if it will fit) to up the gear ratio a bit
