There is a place right here in Denver Colorado that has all kinds of Kz engines as scraps, but I cant do much for you on getting the parts. I am not good at shipping and stuff, but the place is called Steeles and they have basically anything you could be looking for
1979 KZ SR650, stock candy persimmon red and crossover pipes
1981 KZ 1000LTD with non stock and more comfortable handle bars and 4 into one V&H
Original man of the Caribbean

The one I have is from an LTD which is the same as an A standard, but it is silver. Some of the standards were black. Does the color matter?

Externally, it appears in good shape and turns over, but I'll have to rig up a starter to do a compression test.

hmm..with only 20k miles, I'd question any mechanic telling you it has so many internal problems, my 82 550 has ~23k miles now and still tests at about 175 PSI on all cylinders without a rebuild of any kind in its history, and it sure hasn't been babied or really well maintained.

I agree Werewolfx, the 550's can take a beating. I wouldn't trust the odometer on how many miles it has. It's possible that's not even the original motor. The fact that it's leaking a lot of oil tells me it may have been rebuilt by someone already. Original motors don't leak much oil unless they've really been shagged. Rebuilds can go either way. The only motor I have that leaks oil is one that was rebuilt before I bought it.

I'll try to dig up the one I have this week and take a look at it. It got shuffled around in the move this year.
