Replace valve springs?
04 Sep 2006 19:44
I am putting Web #118 cams in a 79 KZ1000 I am restoring. Web specifies stock springs as ok. Should I replace the old stock springs anyway. They only have 4500 miles on them but are 27 years old. If replaced, would stronger springs allow higher rpms or just rob power and increase wear rate?

I would measure as per the manual.
If OK, then they are OK. If you find valve float to be a problem you can go with the next stiffer springs. Stiffer sprngs require more power. It's a compromise.

In many cases, "can use stock springs" means it will fit with stock springs, doesn't mean that is the best choice.
Invest in some good springs, it will only compliment your cams.

valve float with shim on top lifters is a very bad thing,(spit shim, trash head) the stronger springs would be cheap insurance, IMHO, if you miss a gear.
also while you have the springs/valves out you can stick the cams in,roll em over, and make sure they don't come in contact with the lifter bores.
along with doing a valve/valve seal job.
