Hi everybody,

I have the opportunity to buy a 79 KZ650 for relatively cheap. The previous owner filled the oil to the bottom of the filler cap instead of to the top of the window and tried to run it like that. The damage that is evident is blown seals. Any other potential damage that could be the result of overfilling the oil? Just trying to see if it will be a cost effective project for the asking price.

Cheers!

Hey Maverick. Pull the plugs and try to take a look down into the top of the piston. There is a slight (I said slight) chance that the oil needed a place to escape to and filled the cylinders.

If this is the case you will likely need to pull the motor apart to replace the seals and also for a thorough cleaning.

I have seen holed pistons result from over filling the oil also.

Exceptionally nice bikes are much harder to find than good engines which are much harder to find than good used engine parts.

If it's a beautiful bike and inexpensive, I'd jump on it and worry about the engine later.

were they able to start the bike with that much oil in it? the crank had to be submerged! if it was not started just drain it out, pull the plugs out to look in there, the refill and try to start it.

Yes, I guess it would start, but it wouldn't run very good (surprise...), and the result was the blown out seals... Once the oil volume was corrected, it was only run for about 50-100 miles with the leaking seals...
