I have a 1980 fuel injected kz1000. It is the G1 Classic. This bike is the only one with chrome side panels on the gas tank.

Most people with this model have pulled off the EFI and put on carbs. I am still running the efi.

Ask you friend how his chrome panels are and if he wants to get rid of them.

My chrome panels are a little dented up and one has a hold rusted thru.

My MKII manual also covers a bike that looks exactly like the MKII but with fuel injection. May have been a European bike only. I've never seen one other than in my manual.
The Kaw List:
Current: 79 KZ1000 A3 MKII, 78 KZ1000 A2, 78 KZ1000 Z1-R, 78 KZ650 SR, 80 KE175

I suspect it is, look at the sidecovers :)
It says "Z1000" and then under that "Fuel Injection"

That was the Z1000H in the UK in 1980, replaced by the (carbed) 998cc Z1000J in 1981.

I saw one of those FI KZs with the chrome side panels on the gas tank in a salvage yard in Sacramento about 3 years ago. I was tempted, but it looked very rough.

Sure is! I just ran across a photo of the bike and when I logged on to post it, I saw Stein's post. Here's the stock version -
