1982 Kawasaki KZ1000 tachometer fluctuation
21 Jul 2020 11:48
Looking for tachometer advice. My tachometer fluctuates at highway speed. Will not stay steady and fluctuates up an down while the engine remains at a constant RPM.
Anyone have an idea what might actually be the issue?
Thanks
Marc

Easy first, remove the cable, take the inner out and clean it. Look for any frayed or kinked sections. If none pack the outer with grease and slide the inner back through so ensuring it is well lubricated. Ensure the cable route is nice and even curves.
The other possible issue is not quite so simple. There is a magnetic and oil damper i the rev counter. The damper s do eventually weep oil and dry up. I've never seen a sucesfully re filled one but it must be possible.

Good advice! I've heard of people refilling their oil reservoir but never seen it done. I think Z Resto replaces them.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Thank you, however I believe this is a digital tachometer.
No cable.
No cable.

The Kawasaki FSM has troubleshooting info w a flow chart for checking the meters.
There's a pdf available that covers your model & it may be linked here on KZR in the Filebase section.
Some of the basic stuff to check is to make sure all of the connections are good & clean and make sure the meters are properly fastened to the meter bracket. I don't know that much about it, other than what I've glanced at in the manual.

My '82 does the same thing. Anyone know of a company that does classic tach repairs?

This may not be the problem with yours, but my jumpy tach needle was caused by a faulty yellow-black ground wire connection. On my 82 1100A that wire is attached at the left ignition coil bracket, behind one of the bolts. In my case, a good bolt tighten was all it needed.

I've got the same issue on my original 750E tach and couldn't figure out how to deal with the damper. Gave up and bought a new tach. If anyone knows how to rebuild the damper please share.

Interesting thought and I thank you for sharing that. I will certainly take a look more closely at the grounds in this system.
